Eating only vegetables can increase the risk of stroke

A major study has revealed that people who eat only vegetables are less likely to have a heart attack and have an increased risk of stroke.

In this study, when vegetarians were compared to meat eaters, they had 10 fewer heart attacks and 3 more strokes per 1,000 people.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, followed the health of 48,000 people over a period of 18 years.

But it could not be said with certainty whether these results were due to their diet or some other aspect of life was the main cause.

This food can save the world.

Health experts say that eating a variety of foods is the best for people's diet and their preferences.

What did the research reveal?

It also included data from the Epic and Oxford Research, a long-running project on health and nutrition.

Half of those added between 1993 and 2001 were meat eaters, while more than 16,000 were vegetarians or vegans. Among them were 7500 people who only eat fish for meat.

In the initial phase of the study, people were asked about their dietary habits and this question was repeated in 2010. Factors such as medical history, smoking and physical exertion are also taken into account in the research.

A total of 2820 people were suffering from heart disease and 1072 patients were under the influence of stroke. It also included 300 cases of hemorrhagic stroke, which occurs when weakened blood vessels burst and bleed into the brain.

Compared to non-vegetarians, meat-only fish eaters had a 13% lower risk of heart disease. While vegetarians had a 22% lower risk of heart disease.

On the other hand, vegetarians had a 20% higher risk of stroke. According to the researchers, this may be related to vitamin B12 deficiency, but more research is needed to confirm this.

It is also possible that these diseases are not related to people's diet and that the research only highlights different elements of the lives of non-meat eaters.

Does this suggest that vegetarianism is not healthy?

According to Dr. Frankie Phillips of the Dietetic Association in Great Britain, vegetarianism is not an unhealthy habit because this was only observational research.

So it's a connection. Not the result of any action.

It is not necessary that the diet of carnivores consists of different ingredients. Because they may eat meat and potatoes every night and not use any vegetables.'

Did people change their diet after the study began?

The researchers asked the study participants again in 2010 if they had made any changes in their eating habits and likes and dislikes.

Dr. Phillips says that the diet of vegetarians may have changed.

It could also be that the vegetarian habits 20 to 30 years ago were different from today.

Now a variety of foods are widely available for vegetarians. It has become very common now.

We also know that eating too much meat can be dangerous to health.

In the United Kingdom, the National Health Service (NHS), a public health organization, defines dietary balance as follows:

Meals should include foods high in fiber and starch, such as potatoes, bread, rice or pasta

Don't forget protein, get it from meat, fish, seafood, lentils, tofu or dried fruits like unsalted almonds or walnuts.

Use milk or milk substitutes

Avoid or eat less of foods high in fat and sugar or salt

Also, vegetarians should take care to get certain nutrients.

For example, vitamin B12 is important for healthy blood and nervous system. In those who eat meat, milk or fish, its amount is sufficient according to the requirement.

Vitamin B12 is also found in certain breakfast cereals and yeast spreads, but can be deficient in vegetarians.

Iron in vegetables is not easily absorbed, so it is important for vegetarians to include wholemeal bread, dried fruits and pulses in their diet.

Last month, vegetarians were advised to include a nutrient called choline in their diet because it is essential for brain health.
